Job Description
About the Role: We are seeking a highly qualified and experienced Fire Chief to lead our fire department. The Fire Chief will perform a variety of technical, administrative, and supervisory work in planning, organizing, directing, and implementing all aspects of the fire department.
Such work includes and not limited to, creating, and maintaining department policies, ensuring required records are submitted complete and accurate, staff training, evaluations, and ensuring all department services are continually monitored to prevent the loss of life and property by fire and/or emergency medical conditions.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Establish SOP, ERP, and Assessment for the fire department
2. Prepares shift scheduling of all personnel.
3. Recommends all appointments, promotions, demotions, transfers, and terminations of personnel.
4. Directly supervises all department personnel, with assistance from subordinate officers. 5. Ensures that accurate and complete records of employee benefits and personnel forms are completed and maintained.
6. Investigates all disciplinary matters and recommends appropriate disciplinary action.
7. Recommends and enforces all department policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.
8. Periodically evaluates employee job descriptions, standard operating guidelines, and personnel policies and procedures to ensure they are updated to meet the needs and changes within the department.
9. Organizes the meetings and work sessions with fire department, prepares and presents reports to the Fire on operations and administration of the department; makes recommendations for any policy changes; identifies discrepancies between actual performance and adopted goals and objectives.
10. Assesses and responds to citizen complaints in a timely, courteous and effective manner.
11. Evaluates the need for and recommends the purchase of new equipment, apparatus, additional personnel, and emergency supplies when needed.
12. Performs additional administrative duties as may be assigned by fire department.
13. Responds to alarms, administers initial emergency (care, response and/or service) when necessary, and directs activities at the scene of emergencies, as required. Inspects property for fire dangers and damage.
14. Oversees all firefighting operations and fire prevention procedures including, but not limited to, disaster relief and prevention, hazardous materials, flooding and flood damage prevention, safety, and risk management.
15. Coordinates Mutual Aid Agreements with local Fire Departments.
16. Ensures apparatus is always in good working order.
17. Maintains and implements city disaster preparation plans.
18. Supervises the development and enforcement of regulatory ordinances and codes regarding fire prevention and community safety.
19. Provides guidance to department officers in the planning and implementation of operations, programs, training, and personnel management.
20. Supervises acquisition and disposition of grant expenditures.
21. Train the fire station personnels
Minimum Qualifications:
- Previous experience as a Fire Chief or in a similar leadership role.
- Completion of the following IFSAC training courses:
- Hazmat Awareness (NFPA 472)
- Hazmat Operation (NFPA 472)
- Firefighter I (NFPA 1001)
- Firefighter II (NFPA 1001)
- Driver & Pump Operator (NFPA 1002)
- Fire Instructor I (NFPA 1041)
- Fire Instructor II (NFPA 1041)
- Fire Officer I (NFPA 1021)
- Fire Officer II (NFPA 1021)
- Fire Officer III (NFPA 1021)
- Strong leadership and communication skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and make critical decisions in high-stress situations.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
