Job Description

About the Role: Under direction of the Assistant Chief or the Fire Chief . Fire Station Captain plans, organizes, directs, and administers all operations of the fire department assigned to by the Fire Chief within the authority delegated. Also, in the absence of the Fire Chief. The Fire Station Captain will perform ALL applicable duties of the Fire Chief in a sufficient manner until arrival/return of the Fire Chief.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Supervise all subordinate personnel during a tour of duty.
2. Conduct roll call.
3. Perform basic life support, medical activities, and provides other assistance as required.
4. Respond to alarms received and direct routes to be taken.
5. Direct work of subordinates pending arrival of a superior officer.
6. Determine and supervise methods of fire suppression including laying of lines, direction and pressure of water streams, placement of apparatus, ladders, ventilation of buildings, rescuing of persons, and salvage activities.
7. Supervise daily maintain of departmental equipment, supplies, and facilities to ensure response readiness.
8. Instruct and drill personnel in duties, use of tools, raising of ladders, and rescue work.
9. Review and provide consultation regarding disciplinary actions.
10. Monitor activities to ensure conduct and performance conform to departmental standards.
11. Carry out duties in conformance with Federal, State, County, and local laws and ordinances.
12. Respond to multiple alarm emergencies and assume command in the absence of superior officers.
13. Participate in the operation of departmental in-service training.
14. Prepare a variety of reports and record

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Previous experience as a Fire Station Captain or in a similar leadership role.
  • Completion of the following IFSAC training courses:
    • Hazmat Awareness (NFPA 472)
    • Hazmat Operation (NFPA 472)
    • Firefighter I (NFPA 1001)
    • Firefighter II (NFPA 1001)
    • Driver & Pump Operator (NFPA 1002)
    • Fire Instructor I (NFPA 1041)
    • Fire Officer I (NFPA 1021)
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and make critical decisions in high-stress situations.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
